Tin It Or Bin It – 24 February 2012 – Lemon

We are always interested in handy tools that can help us stay organised and keep track of our money, so when we heard about Lemon we were intrigued.

Lemon is a web tool and mobile app that lets you collect and store your paper and email receipts all in one place and is great for people who shop online frequently for business or pleasure.

It enables you to see how much money you spend and what you spend it on. You can even share your business receipts with your accountant, automatically and in real time, which all sounds pretty nifty.

Users can store their receipts via email and by scanning them using their mobiles. The Lemon app will do the rest, and have your receipts turned into analysable files. If your accountant or boss needs exact copies of the receipts, the app can provide a URL for them to download and view the scanned copies.

To create reports, users just go to the Reports section, select the relevant data and Lemon will generate the information you have requested and present it in a chart.

Lemon’s key service of converting your receipts to analysable digital data and storing them is free, however they do offer three premium services that have a monthly subscription fee – Business, Family and Data plans. These options allow you to link up more accounts, view more detailed data analysis and share it all with your accountant.

There are a few issues with Lemon. With the free account, you are not able to add multiple users and you are subjected to ads, however if you upgrade you can combat these issues. Also, it is not an original idea – there are a few similar services out there such as Expensify, Receipt Bank and Shoeboxed.

So Tin It Or Bin It? Lemon is a handy tool to help manage your money and receipts, simply and all in one spot. It can save you a lot of time and potentially even money as you learn how to spend smarter.

This app is a Tin It.

Tin It Or Bin It – 17 February 2012 – Facebook Cover Photo trouble? There’s now an App to help you

Last month we reported that Facebook’s Timeline will be eventually rolled out to all users.  We, like many others, have struggled to find a really cool, cute or clever cover photo to impress our online buddies. Also any pictures we did decide on didn’t quite fit the rectangular space allocated. So we were excited to hear that there is a free Android app available that saves you hassle by helping you choose a cover photo.

Facebook Timeline Covers:D33P (pronounced Deep) lets you input your own photos or lets you choose from its own gallery of cover art. There is a selection of over 50 cover art to choose from – zombies and dinosaurs can inspire a frightened profile picture for example. You can also take a photo right in the app, while previewing how it will look on your profile.

This app is a lot of fun and there is an option called “seamless mode” that takes a segment of the cover photo to become the profile picture, which means you have one quirky, seamless image.

Some of the new Cover Arts photos installed include special holidays such as Chinese New Year, Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Australia Day etc.

This app is currently free but will not stay that way for long so if you like the sound of it you should download it while you can. Facebook Timeline Covers:D33P is fun and does what it says on the tin. TIN IT.

CIVIC launches cookie control solution

Tuesday, February 7th, 2012

Webmasters are now able to avoid prosecution following the launch of Cookie Control, a cookie consent solution, by digital communications agency CIVIC. Cookie Control was developed in response to demand from CIVIC’s many government clients including the Scottish Government, SQA and Skills Development Scotland. Developed at no cost to the taxpayer, the project is a great example of collaboration both within the public sector and the private sector.

To act in accordance with new EU legislation, websites must now gain consent for the use of cookies or similar technologies. From May 2012, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) will begin to prosecute webmasters who have failed to comply.

The law means that webmasters must audit their cookies and present clear information about them on their privacy policy and provide a mechanism for obtaining consent, before cookies are collected, and make any technical changes to cookie-storing scripts in order to test for consent before any are stored.

CIVIC’s Cookie Control solution is a smart plug-in, designed to gain user consent where other solutions have failed. It comes with an online configurator where users can set their customised styling options, select the position of the Cookie Control icon, edit the supplied boiler-plate text and include a link to their privacy policy.

The service will also provide examples of how to adapt standard third party scripts to test for user consent before they run, and the team at CIVIC are also available to help with custom implementations and cookie audits.

While many websites will be able to comply with a few tweaks to their code and the application of Cookie Control, some third party apps like Google Analytics and websites reliant on sales and advertising, will be affected. Not surprisingly, many website owner’s reactions have been quite negative.

Big providers of internet services liberally use cookies to make their websites work, track user behaviour and personalise the user’s browsing experience, however this data, once brought into existence, has a way of getting out, being repurposed for commercial gain or otherwise misused.

Mark Steven, CIVIC’s Head of Client Services, says: “Despite the overall unenthusiastic reaction, we think the new cookie law will produce a new kind of good practise for websites and prevent user-identifiable data getting into the hands of big corporates and their governments. Ultimately, for the protection of individual freedoms online, this is a good thing.”

“We think our Cookie Control solution is a simple, universal way for websites to comply with the regulations and we look forward to helping websites stay on the right side of the law.”

CIVIC is an independent creative digital communications agency with significant experience in the public and private sector. Using what it calls “creative technology”, CIVIC blends design with cutting edge digital expertise to bring business strategies to realisation through digital media.

miiCard expands global presence

Tuesday, February 7th, 2012

Today, at FinovateEurope in London, online identity verification service miiCard will announce the global expansion of support for its ‘digital passport’ to include South Africa, India, Australia and New Zealand. The news further boosts miiCard’s already strong start to the year, which has seen a partnership with credit solutions provider Callcredit and TRUSTe Web Privacy certification. This international reach, combined with strategic partnerships, cements miiCard’s exclusive position as the only Electronic Identity and Verification (eID&V) service to prove identity purely online and in real time to anti-money laundering (AML) standard, globally.

James Varga, miiCard CEO, comments: “Proving online identity is the final barrier to global trade. The need to create trust online is a worldwide problem so we are delighted to be rolling out support for miiCard in India, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. This takes us one step closer to conducting business, protecting consumers and fighting fraud internationally, without resorting to physical offline identity validation.”

A user-centric service, miiCard provides the primary ID verification that is missing from existing eID&V solutions, and can be used as an online equivalent to the offline driver’s licence or passport checks normally conducted in a range of industries like financial services, ecommerce, dating and gambling. miiCard is powered by Yodlee, the leading Personal Finance Management (PFM) solution behind 85% of online users at leading bank and portal sites worldwide.

The Callcredit partnership brings together miiCard’s anti-impersonation technology with Callcredit’s award winning data based electronic verification solutions, to provide an unrivalled level of protection and convenience for consumers and companies wanting to do business purely online.

“Our strategic relationships with Yodlee and Callcredit demonstrate confidence in the miiCard digital passport to change the way we trade and transact online, and we are very excited to be working with them to create trust on the Internet,” Varga says.

FinovateEurope is one of the most influential trade shows for the financial services industry and is designed to showcase the most innovative financial technology products and ideas from established industry leaders as well as cutting-edge startups like miiCard.

Eric Mattson, CEO of The Finovate Group says “We are delighted to bring miiCard back to FinovateEurope for a second year. miiCard’s digital passport innovation is an exciting idea in online identity that has the potential to make a real impact on how retail banks interact online with their customers.”

Tin It Or Bin It – 3 February 2012 – Use Facebook friends to help you find a job

It’s Friday again already, which means its time for your weekly social media rundown. This week we are looking at career website and community Glassdoor, who have just announced the launch of Inside Connections. The new feature enables job seekers to discover if they know someone at a company where they want to work and provides inside information on the company.

Users can sign into Glassdoor using Facebook Connect and search through 150,000 companies. If they are interested in a specific organisation they can find out which connections, within their Facebook ‘friends’, and ‘friends of friends’, is a current employee or has worked there previously.

Inside Connections enables its users to browse information such as job listings, salary details, interview questions and anonymous reviews, which means they get the inside scoop on what its actually like to work at specific companies, before they sign on the dotted line.

Glassdoor’s new service does sound pretty useful but does it stand a chance against professional networks such as LinkedIn? The team at HTR think so.

LinkedIn is great for making professional connections but linking up through Facebook has much more of an informal and unofficial touch, particularly when you are just starting your career and trying to get your foot in the door. The people you interact with on Facebook know you better and are interested in your personal development. It’s your friends and family that will do what they can to get you started. We think that it’s a great service and we think that it could change the way young people find jobs in the future. In light of the current high unemployment figures at the moment, anything that can help people find work can only be a good thing.

Glassdoor’s Inside Connections is a Tin It.

EdgeCase Acquired By Digital Garage to form New Context

Wednesday, February 1st, 2012

EdgeCase, the leading Ruby on Rails software company, has announced its acquisition by Tokyo based technology company Digital Garage, creating a global consultancy – New Context.  New Context will operate out of the US, the UK and Japan and signals a change in the way startups are supported.

Through acquisitions of leading companies like EdgeCase, Digital Garage hopes to expand its capabilities and offer a full service for startups. Targeting the Lean Startup movement, the consultancy will assist with the design, development and delivery of web and mobile applications based on lean and agile methodologies.

Digital Garage, since its establishment in 1995, has pioneered various domains of Internet business in Japan, including portals, media representation, e-Commerce, mobile communication and blogging. An investor in Twitter and Path, Digital Garage has created partnerships to customise the Japanese versions of Technorati, Twitter and LinkedIn.

Paul Wilson, EdgeCase UK MD explains:  “I am delighted that we will have the opportunity to bring the Lean Startup Methodology to established businesses, as well as startups, as it is the most important business development of the past five years. This is an incredibly exciting moment for EdgeCase and I am absolutely thrilled to be part of it.”

Since its launch in 2006, EdgeCase has specialised in the development of mobile and web applications for both startups and Fortune 500 companies. The company currently employs 33 people, from offices in Columbus and Cincinnati, Ohio and Edinburgh, Scotland.

The acquisition follows a period of sustained growth, and will see Paul Wilson become Managing Director of EdgeCase UK. Founders Ken Barker and Joe O’Brien will continue in their previous roles as President and CEO respectively.

Joe O’Brien, CEO and co-founder of EdgeCase comments:  “We have always excelled at building software and teams. We help startups get on their feet technically and by hiring and training teams for them. For our Fortune 500 clients we are able to translate the lean and agile concepts from our startup clients, as well as train their existing teams on the newer technologies for maximum impact.  Forming New Context gives us an incredible platform to help take our work to the next level and offer clients a broader set of capabilities and strengths as well as reach places we have not been able to yet, such as the Asian market.”

New Context President and group CTO of DG, Ian McFarland comments: “We’re excited to bring together so many thought leaders from the design and development worlds under one roof. EdgeCase has a proven track record in eliminating risk in the areas of design and implementation. Combined with Digital Garage’s strength in operations and finance, we see huge potential to reshape how software is designed, developed and delivered. This is just a first step, but we think it’s a big one.”

The acquisition has already drawn attention from leading industry figures. Biz Stone, co-founder of Twitter, Inc and the Obvious Corporation, says: “I’m really excited about the vision Ian has made for New Context. I think it has the potential to transform how software is made, and really help their clients to take Agile and Lean to a new level.”

And Eric Ries, author of New York Times bestseller ‘The Lean Startup’ lends his support:  “I’m excited by the birth of this new company, dedicated to lean startup principles, and addressing both design and development.  This integrated approach is both powerful and unique.”
