New Face of Pool Unveiled With Launch of Marco’s Pool Hall

Marco’s Pool Hall and Pizza Bar, 79 Grove Street, Edinburgh, EH3 8AB

Tuesday 4 November ~ Edinburgh’s most anticipated new venue, Marco’s Pool Hall and Pizza Bar, will open its doors tomorrow in the heart of the west end. Giving pool a makeover fit for the 21st century, the Grove Street bar is the latest project from Paul Demarco, Managing Director of Marcos Leisure.

Set on the site of the original Marco’s Leisure Centre, which first opened its doors in the 70s, the resurrection of this legendary space will see pool return to its spiritual home on Grove Street. Originally opened by Paul Demarco’s father, Bert and uncle, Ramon, Marco’s Leisure housed 65 snooker tables and was, at its height, hailed as the largest snooker club in the world.

Hot on the heels of bowling and ping pong, both of which have been transformed in recent years, the pool hall will reveal a side to the game never seen before. Eschewing the usual dark and dingy atmosphere of traditional pool halls, Marco’s favours slick décor and a smooth vibe.

Featuring exposed copper and decorative lighting; the well stocked bar upstairs serves drinks alongside stone baked pizzas with a VIP mezzanine available for private and corporate events. Rare photographs and vintage memorabilia from the Marco’s archive line the walls in a nostalgic nod to the past.

Downstairs, far from the dingy surroundings people have come to expect, pillars of multicoloured LED light up 18 state of the art American Pool tables in the dedicated space.

Paul said “It has been an honour and a labour of love to restore and reinvent Marco’s for a new generation. The space has been utterly transformed and is unrecognisable from its previous incarnation as Marco’s Leisure Centre. The Demarco family has always been ahead of the curve and this new venture should challenge people’s perceptions about what a pool hall can be.

“This isn’t pool as we’ve come to know it, it’s stylish and cool. What we’re offering is different from anything else happening in Edinburgh just now so it’s an exciting time. Marco’s on Grove Street was always a big part of Edinburgh life so it’s great that we’ll be able to offer that to a new generation of people looking to try something a bit out of the ordinary.”

The Demarco family has a long history of entrepreneurship and has consistently been at the forefront of new trends, from snooker in the 50s, squash in the 70s and aerobics and kids soft play in the 80s. Affectionately known as the Godfather of Scottish snooker, Paul’s grandfather, Bert Snr, grew the Jubilee Café, Suppoer Rooms and Snooker Hall on West Granton Road into a prosperous enterprise from the 40s through to the early 70s. Their flagship venue the Corn Exchange is Edinburgh’s most successful Concert and Events Venue and they operate the World Of football Scotland’s finest Indoor football centre.
