Inspiring Generation Z to become Scotland’s future cyber crime fighters

The hunt is on for the nation’s best young codebreakers as Cyber Games Scotland launches its 2017 competition during a week of dedicated digital skills events run by organisations across Scotland.

Now open for registrations, Cyber Games Scotland is part of a wider drive to inspire more young people to pick a career fighting cyber crime.

The competition tests teams of 12 to 16 year olds in innovative scenarios designed to develop the practical and usable cyber security skills in demand by industry. Last year 176 teams from schools across Scotland registered to ‘crack each other’s code’.

CodeClan celebrates first anniversary with Glasgow expansion in 2017

CodeClan, Scotland’s first accredited digital skills academy, celebrates its first birthday this week with welcome news that its first 16-week software development course in Glasgow will start in January 2017.

The ground breaking 16-week course will be delivered by CodeClan in The Tontine, Glasgow’s new high-tech acceleration and growth space for young aspiring businesses.

Digital Xtra opens new round of funding for extracurricular computing projects

Scotland’s Digital Xtra Fund launched in May 2016 and awarded £250,000 to 12 projects, which expect to reach a combined total of 10,500 young people across the country by March 2017. An additional £150,000 has now been made available in response to the high number of applications received for the first round of funding.

Applications open today (3 October) via Public Contracts Scotland and eligible organisations can bid for grants from £1500 to a maximum £25000 per project to support computing science and digital skills focused extracurricular activities for 2016/17.

Funding is intended to support enterprising organisations that give young people aged 16 and under opportunities to learn computer science related digital skills and contribute to widening the provision of extracurricular computing science related activities across Scotland.

Scotland’s First Digital Skills Academy Appoints CEO Harvey Wheaton

CodeClan, Scotland’s first digital software skills academy, today announced the appointment of Harvey Wheaton, as its first Chief Executive Officer (CEO).

Wheaton will play a key role in launching CodeClan in Edinburgh, and leading it to success as it prepares to open its doors in October to the first cohort of students.

With 25 years experience in software development, Harvey has worked for a broad range of companies including ICI, Astra Zeneca, Cap Gemini, JPMorgan Chase and Electronic Arts.

Most recently Wheaton has coached a wide variety of software development teams around the world, from video games companies to large financial institutions, helping them transform the way they develop, test and deploy their products and services using Agile methodologies.

Graduates in demand with Scottish digital technologies industry set for further growth in 2015

New research from ScotlandIS is forecasting strong growth for the digital technologies industry in Scotland, with 83% of organisations planning to increase staff numbers and 86% of businesses expecting sales to rise in the coming year.

And there is good news for computer science students approaching their final exams, with high demand for graduates and 74% of organisations expecting to recruit in 2015.

The annual survey of 150 organisations, carried out on behalf of ScotlandIS by Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce, also found that Scottish businesses are undertaking a significant amount of international activity, with Europe, USA and Canada seen as the most attractive overseas markets for the second year running.
