It’s been a manic month here in Edinburgh. If you didn’t bend over backwards to catch as many Fringe shows as possible, then you probably spent your time carefully avoiding the endless crowds on your way to and from work every day.

Now the mayhem is finally over, there’s still plenty left to see and do! Check out Hot Tin Roof’s pick of the hottest tech meetups and events you won’t want to miss this month…

Hack for the Homeless

 

At the start of this month, Edinburgh Napier University will be organising a “hackathon” in aid of Action for Children in support of ByteNight which will see Scotland’s tech community have the chance to band together using their skills to work on solutions for those suffering from or at risk of homelessness.

The event takes place from Saturday 1st to Sunday 2nd of September and you can register your interest here.

Codebase Commons

 

The Commons is Edinburgh’s monthly get-together for anybody in tech. Organised by the UK’s largest tech incubator, Codebase, this months event takes place at Paradise Palms on the 6th of September.

CodeClan Edinburgh: CoderDojo

 

CoderDojo Scotland is part of a global collaboration that provides free coding clubs to young people, enabling them to learn how to programme in a fun, safe and sociable environment. If you, or anybody you know, is interested in getting involved, there are meetups this month on the 13th in Leith, the 19th in Stockbridge, and the 20th at CodeClan.

Women Who Code

 

Women Who Code is a global non-profit that dedicates itself to inspiring women to get involved in technology careers and promoting women in tech. The Edinburgh branch gets together once a month. Check them out on the 25th of September at the FreeAgent offices in Fountainbridge!

ScotlandIS presents its annual conference featuring the best of the Scottish tech sector on the 27th of September at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre.

Over 1300 delegates are expected to attend this year for the event, which will feature speakers from all across the world including Eric McAfee, a Silicon Valley-based entrepreneur and venture capitalist, and Dave McCann, VP of AWS Marketplace.

IPOS founders choose tech PR specialists Hot Tin Roof to launch new business

Robin Knox and Paul Walton have appointed Hot Tin Roof to provide strategic PR support to launch their new tech startup, Boundary.

The new venture between the Intelligent Point of Sale (IPOS) founders is a smart home security system, bringing affordable protection to homeowners and renters alike. IPOS was sold to iZettle and then acquired by PayPal for $2.2 billion in May 2018.

Hot Tin Roof has been instrumental in the launch of some Scotland’s most influential startups and digital technology enterprises including FreeAgent, Aquila Insight and CodeClan. The agency has worked with a number of key stakeholders from public and private sector to raise awareness of the digital skills gap over the last decade. Most recently it helped to launch Skills Development Scotland’s ‘Digital World’ a STEM and digital skills campaign aimed at teenagers and career changers.

CodeClan appoints Melinda Matthews Clarkson as new CEO

CodeClan, the UK’s first and only fully accredited digital skills academy, has appointed a former senior figure at technology giant IBM as its new Chief Executive Officer as the organisation looks to build its presence across Scotland in 2018.

Melinda Matthews Clarkson, who has more than 25 years experience in the technology sector, says she plans to grow the organisation, extend CodeClan’s operations beyond the Central Belt, and expand its successful partnerships with business in the months ahead.

Originally from the US, Ms Matthews Clarkson has lived in Scotland for the past 10 years, and was until recently Vice President of Commerce Partnerships at IBM. She has been deeply involved in bringing a range of new product offerings in Cloud, SaaS, eCommerce and Digital Marketing to the marketplace.

CodeClan scoops ‘Best Education Provider’ at coveted Digital Technology Awards

CodeClan’s ground breaking programming course has seen the academy lift the gong for ‘Best Education Provider’ at this year’s ScotlandIS Digital Technology Awards, beating off strong competition.

The award, which is CodeClan’s first official award win, was given to the academy in recognition of its work to help close Scotland’s digital skills gap. Since its launch in October 2015, CodeClan has trained over 180 students and the judges praised the academy’s implementation and its increasing impact in helping to address the industry skills requirements. CodeClan empowers employers to plug Scotland’s digital skills gap

New source of tech talent as CodeClan’s Glasgow course takes off

CodeClan, the UK’s first accredited digital skills academy, is offering employers access to a fresh source of digital talent in the west as its Glasgow courses get off to a flying start.

CodeClan becomes UK’s first accredited digital skills academy

Scotland’s only digital skills academy has become the first in the UK to offer its students a Professional Development Award (PDA) from the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA).

CodeClan teaches students to code software in an intensive 16-week course and will be the first educational facility in the world to offer SQA’s internationally recognised (PDA) in Software Development.

CodeClan has been instrumental in working alongside SQA to establish this new award, which will be available at three levels on the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF levels 7, 8 and 9). The new PDA will also be available to all SQA approved educational and training facilities.

CodeClan appoints Polly Purvis as first Chair

One of the leading figures in the Scottish digital technologies industry has been appointed Chair of CodeClan, Scotland’s first digital skills academy.

Polly Purvis, chief executive of trade body ScotlandIS, which works on behalf of its members in the digital technologies sector, will bring more than 15 years of industry experience to the board as CodeClan’s first Chair.

Purvis was one of the project team behind the creation of CodeClan, working to meet aggressive time targets to attract its first students, and she will continue to play an active role in determining its future direction.

CodeClan is home to a welcoming, active and inspiring community, bound together with a shared goal of producing talented, work ready people hungry for a career in digital. (more…)

ScotlandIS awards CodeClan Scholarship

ScotlandIS today announced the award of its CodeClan scholarship to Michael MacLeod, a freelance journalist and former TV producer.

CodeClan is Scotland’s first digital skills academy and the ScotlandIS Scholarship was set up to fund one outstanding applicant through the academy’s ground-breaking coding course.

There was fierce competition for the award, which aims to increase access to the CodeClan CX3 course. It was open to applicants who had not been to university and had not worked in an IT or software career to date.

Before winning the scholarship, Michael had an interest in coding and taught himself the basics whilst working as a journalist. He made the decision to leave his full time job to pursue this further.

Commenting on the news, Michael said: “I am delighted to have won this scholarship and to have a place at CodeClan. I’m really looking forward to the intensive learning ahead. I see coding as a force for good and a means of vastly expanding my horizons after I graduate from the course.”

Digital Skills Academy to Launch SIMUL8 Scholarship

CodeClan, Scotland’s first digital skills academy, has today announced an exclusive scholarship to fund one outstanding applicant through its first ground-breaking coding course.

Known as the SIMUL8 Scholarship, the bursary will be fully funded by Scottish software company, SIMUL8 Corporation, which is keen to support CodeClan’s drive to get more coders into the workplace.

With the aim of producing 20 work-ready software developers after every 16-week course, CodeClan’s graduates will help bridge the significant digital skills gap in Scotland. Forecasts suggest Scotland alone could offer up to 11,000 job opportunities a year in the digital sector, rising by 2000 every year.

CodeClan Scotland’s first digital software skills academy to open its doors in September

An ambitious plan to create Scotland’s first dedicated software skills academy is revealed today. Its aim is to produce wave after wave of software developers ready for work every 10 weeks, with the first cohort graduating in February 2016.

CodeClan, a coding school for web and mobile software development, is based on the success of the new breed of immersive academies around the world including Flatiron School in New York, Makers in London and Stackademy in Berlin.

The aim is to create a new generation of software developers that will allow Scotland’s vibrant digital sector to flourish and drive the economy. CodeClan will draw on an untapped resource of talented individuals who have an aptitude for coding but need a route into the industry.
