IPOS founders choose tech PR specialists Hot Tin Roof to launch new business

Robin Knox and Paul Walton have appointed Hot Tin Roof to provide strategic PR support to launch their new tech startup, Boundary.

The new venture between the Intelligent Point of Sale (IPOS) founders is a smart home security system, bringing affordable protection to homeowners and renters alike. IPOS was sold to iZettle and then acquired by PayPal for $2.2 billion in May 2018.

Hot Tin Roof has been instrumental in the launch of some Scotland’s most influential startups and digital technology enterprises including FreeAgent, Aquila Insight and CodeClan. The agency has worked with a number of key stakeholders from public and private sector to raise awareness of the digital skills gap over the last decade. Most recently it helped to launch Skills Development Scotland’s ‘Digital World’ a STEM and digital skills campaign aimed at teenagers and career changers.

Noise, noise, noise. Noise annoys. So, is PR just noise, or is it actually business critical?

PR gets you talked about in the media. And that makes you very attractive to investors and top talent is drawn to you. It also means customers convert. And all of that combined, makes your company grow fast.

PR is seen by most as a ‘vitamin’ rather than a ‘painkiller’, a nice to have, so when budgets are tight it’s one of the first things to get cut. Which is only natural but can also be short sighted because it means you slip under the radar. (more…)

SEP’s Calum Paterson appointed Chair of BVCA

The British Private Equity and Venture Capital Association (BVCA) has welcomed Calum Paterson, Managing Partner of Scottish Equity Partners (SEP), as its Chairman for 2018/19.

The BVCA, which represents the private equity and venture capital industry in the UK, has more than 700 member firms, including over 300 fund managers and 120 institutional investors.

Mr Paterson has worked in private equity and venture capital since 1991. He was co-founder of SEP in 2000 and has been responsible for managing the firm since then. SEP is one of the UK’s leading investors in high-growth companies.

He said: “I am very pleased to take on the role of BVCA Chair, particularly at this important time for the industry and for the UK economy. I would like to pay tribute to my immediate predecessor, Helen Steers of Pantheon Ventures, for doing such an excellent job during the last 12 months. Private equity and venture capital plays a vital role in the UK, not least in terms of supporting the growth of innovative companies. NEUROCENTRX appoints two industry heavyweights to board

Neurocentrx, an Edinburgh-based pharmaceutical company, has appointed Nigel Brooksby as Non-Executive Chairman and Dr. Tim Corn as Non-Executive Director to take the company to a global market.

Neurocentrx is developing new clinical indications, and new forms of administration for oral ketamine. This innovative vision, to repurpose an approved human drug most commonly used as an anaesthetic, has the potential to improve pain management, and significantly impact how psychiatric conditions such as severe depression are treated.

FarrPoint helps secure a total of £28.5m for full-fibre funding for local networks

IT, telecoms and infrastructure consultancy FarrPoint has provided vital consultancy services that has led to successful bids to fund full-fibre connectivity in the Highland Council and Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) regions, with a combined value of £28.5 million.

The authorities were awarded the funding by the Government in the Chancellor’s spring statement as part of the £190M Challenge Fund to promote the roll out of full-fibre to local areas. (more…)

SHE Software eyes international expansion following £3m funding deal from NVM Private Equity

East Kilbride based SHE Software has secured a £3 million growth capital investment from NVM Private Equity (NVM) as it prepares to enter international markets with its highly configurable health and safety software and create over 50 new jobs by the end of 2018.

SHE Software will use the funding to open up 15 highly skilled jobs in a new office in the US and has ambitious plans to double the size of its development and support teams at its Scotland HQ, where it currently employs 60 staff.

Led by CEO Matthew Elson, SHE Software is the creator of Assure, a software platform that helps businesses to achieve and demonstrate health and safety compliance, whilst at the same time generating cost-savings by significantly reducing the administrative burden.

I grew up in the 70s and rebelled against Mum’s home baking and ‘health foods’.  Give me Pizza, Crisps, Mac Cheese and M&S Lasagne!  Now I’ve come full circle, revelling in seeds, nuts, gluten free and non-dairy.  My resolution is to continue falling in love with healthy eating.

CodeClan appoints Melinda Matthews Clarkson as new CEO

CodeClan, the UK’s first and only fully accredited digital skills academy, has appointed a former senior figure at technology giant IBM as its new Chief Executive Officer as the organisation looks to build its presence across Scotland in 2018.

Melinda Matthews Clarkson, who has more than 25 years experience in the technology sector, says she plans to grow the organisation, extend CodeClan’s operations beyond the Central Belt, and expand its successful partnerships with business in the months ahead.

Originally from the US, Ms Matthews Clarkson has lived in Scotland for the past 10 years, and was until recently Vice President of Commerce Partnerships at IBM. She has been deeply involved in bringing a range of new product offerings in Cloud, SaaS, eCommerce and Digital Marketing to the marketplace.

FarrPoint helps bring fibre to the home in Oxfordshire

Independent specialist in telecoms and information technology consultants, FarrPoint, has today announced that they have completed a major milestone in their work on the West Oxfordshire Superfast Broadband project.

The Edinburgh based company supported the District Council throughout all stages of the procurement to select the right supplier to bring Next Generation Access broadband (NGA) to more than four thousand rural homes and business in the area. The contract was awarded to Gigaclear, a rural broadband specialist, who will extend its ultrafast Fibre-to-the-Premise (FTTP) network to the area.

BLACKBX targets China and Europe with LigoWave WiFi partnership

BLACKBX, the disruptive tech company, has announced a deal with US wireless networking solutions company LigoWave to deliver their pioneering guest WiFi software to the Chinese market and beyond.

The rapidly growing Edinburgh-based firm will also work with LigoWave to supply guest WiFi at internet access points in Germany, France, Italy, and across the Baltic nations, all the while eyeing further growth throughout the potentially lucrative Chinese market. Furthermore, the agreement should support BLACKBX in increasing its existing footprint globally thanks to LigoWave’s presence in some 150 countries.

FarrPoint expands into London office as it celebrates 10 years in business

Scottish IT and infrastructure consultancy company FarrPoint has opened a new office in London to support its rapid expansion and as a base for its activities across the country.

The firm, based in Edinburgh, has seen its turnover increase by 28 per-cent in the last year and has expanded its team to twelve employees, a growth of over a third in the past twelve months. (more…)

Robots, virtual reality and cyber security at ScotSoft: Scotland’s largest tech event

The premier event in the Scottish tech calendar returns in October to the EICC with its biggest speaker lineup yet, hosted as always by digital technologies trade body ScotIandIS.

Now in its 20th year, ScotSoft brings together more than 600 CEOs, decision makers and developers from the private and public sectors in Edinburgh on 5 October.

Digital Xtra Fund on the hunt for inspiring digital initiatives for young people

Projects that teach digital technologies skills to young people could be in line for a financial boost as the Digital Xtra Fund announces its first funding round since becoming a charity.

A total of £50,000 will be available for projects that inspire young people by taking digital skills out of the classroom and teaching concepts like computational thinking, coding, digital making, or data science in a fun environment. Applications open on 16 June and each project can apply for up to £5000.

The Digital Xtra Fund was created in 2016 to fund a variety of projects, all with an aim to foster a new generation of digital makers who will, in future, bridge the skills gap in Scotland’s digital economy. (more…)

Employers should ‘keep an open mind’ when recruiting digital talent

Employers should look beyond a candidate’s technical ability and take into consideration wider background experience when it comes to hiring digital talent, according to specialist IT recruitment firm, Cathcart Associates.

Recent figures released by the Digital Technologies Skills Group has shown that Scotland has a hidden pipeline of digital skills talent. Research found almost a third (31%) of graduates entering Scotland’s digital sector come from non-computing backgrounds, such as design, business and physical sciences. (more…)

CodeClan’s ground breaking programming course has seen the academy lift the gong for ‘Best Education Provider’ at this year’s ScotlandIS Digital Technology Awards, beating off strong competition.

The award, which is CodeClan’s first official award win, was given to the academy in recognition of its work to help close Scotland’s digital skills gap. Since its launch in October 2015, CodeClan has trained over 180 students and the judges praised the academy’s implementation and its increasing impact in helping to address the industry skills requirements. Pioneering Compressor Company lifts Inventor of the Year award

Edinburgh based compressor company Vert Rotors lifted Inventor of the Year trophy at the prestigious Made in Scotland awards in Glasgow last night.

The company was recognised for the innovation and advances it has made with the production of its micro, near silent and super efficient range of compressors that are all designed and manufactured in Scotland. The company also boasts the smallest low-vibration clean air compressor in the world amongst its product range and a selection of their compressors can be seen on display in the National Museum of Scotland.

Inspiring Generation Z to become Scotland’s future cyber crime fighters

The hunt is on for the nation’s best young codebreakers as Cyber Games Scotland launches its 2017 competition during a week of dedicated digital skills events run by organisations across Scotland.

Now open for registrations, Cyber Games Scotland is part of a wider drive to inspire more young people to pick a career fighting cyber crime.

The competition tests teams of 12 to 16 year olds in innovative scenarios designed to develop the practical and usable cyber security skills in demand by industry. Last year 176 teams from schools across Scotland registered to ‘crack each other’s code’.

FarrPoint to advise Scottish Government on total broadband coverage

Independent specialists in Telecoms and Information Technology, Farrpoint has been appointed to advise the Scottish Government on the planning and rollout of it’s Digital Infrastructure Action Plan.

The initiative was announced by First Minister Nicola Sturgeon at the last election and will include the Reaching 100% Superfast Broadband Coverage Programme (R100) by March 2021.

Pioneering manufacturers bring UK-first precision technology to Scotland

Edinburgh manufacturer, Vert Rotors, has revealed installation of ultra-precision machinery for the manufacture of micro compressors used in satellites and medical devices.

As a result of this news Vert Rotors will create three highly skilled new jobs in Scotland. The project received a £46,000 Regional Selective Assistance (RSA) support grant from Scottish Enterprise, and helped Vert to realise a quarter million investment. (more…)

From drones to little lighthouses – 10 inspiring projects funded by Digital Xtra

The Digital Xtra fund has awarded £150,000 to a series of sustainable digital initiatives aimed at engaging and inspiring Scotland’s next generation of digital makers.

Sums of up to £25,000 were awarded to support 10 extracurricular computing science projects, including one that uses the context of lighthouses to introduce young people to STEM concepts, and another that teaches young people to code using the BBC Micro:bit. (more…)
