From protecting our oceans to unlocking minds: what September looked like at the Hot Tin Roof offices
It’s no surprise that September was another action-packed month for all of us at Hot Tin Roof. From inspiring the next generation of entrepreneurs to addressing methane leaks in our oceans by repurposing existing energy infrastructure, these are the stories that made waves across the UK and internationally.
So, sit back, grab a cuppa, and take a look at some of our highlights from last month.
Rockit-ing towards a greener future
First, we helped announce new technology from Rockit, a cleantech initiative at Heriot-Watt University, which is working on sealing methane leaks in our oceans. Thanks to the chemical wizardry of researchers at the University’s iNetz Global Research Institute, Rockit aims to plug 100,000 methane-leaking wells by 2034.
That’s like putting a cork in Earth’s greenhouse gas champagne bottle!
Rockit has benefited from the Scottish Enterprise High Growth Spinout programme, receiving a £75,000 grant.
This story earned 190 pieces of coverage, including a front-page splash in the Herald, alongside coverage in Sky News, the Independent, BBC Radio Scotland, LBC and multiple radio news bulletins.

Inspiring the next wave of innovators
As the new academic year kicks off at universities across the country, Professor Gabriela Medero, Heriot-Watt University’s Associate Principal for Enterprise, is leaving no stone unturned to ensure new students can unlock their entrepreneurial mindset.
Professor Medero invented the K-BRIQ®, a construction brick made from nearly 100% recycled waste. Now, through the ‘Entrepreneurial Minds’ lecture series, she aims to unlock every student’s ability to innovate. The announcement of the lecture series also made the front page of the Edinburgh Evening News.
Making the UK a manufacturing powerhouse
September saw Elite Electronic Systems completed its acquisition of CB Technology, making it one of the largest electronics manufacturers in the UK with a combined annual revenue exceeding £50 million.
We’re proud to have played a role in CB Technology’s journey, providing content strategy, social media guidance and media relations support. Combining forces with Elite Electronic Systems’ in-house team, the important announcement achieved standout coverage in the Irish and Scottish national business media as well as key trade titles.
Well done to both companies on this milestone achievement!
Showcasing thought leaders
One of our jobs is to promote the expertise of our clients’ spokespeople by strategically placing articles in the media – “thought leadership articles” in industry speak.
This month an article we drafted on behalf of Andreas Busch, a Professor of Earth Sciences at Heriot-Watt University, on the potential for repurposing North Sea oil and gas infrastructure to capture geothermal energy appeared in leading industry title Energy Voice.
And we successfully placed a piece by another of the University’s academics working on tech in healthy ageing. Professor Alan Gow discussed the “double-edged sword conundrum”, the idea that tech can be both transformative but also disruptive in healthcare. Leading trade publication Healthcare Leader, a title aimed at industry “reformers”, were so happy with the piece they commissioned a series of case studies on innovation in primary healthcare. Result!

Finally, tech all at sea!
We capped off another busy month by landing an article in respected Scottish newspaper the Press & Journal on work by BT Group to improve 4G connectivity in Mallaig. Key to this success was securing the involvement of a fisherman who is now able to use his phone to speak to shellfish buyers across Europe whilst out at sea.
All-in-all, September was another hugely successful month for us here at Hot Tin Roof where we love the variety in the stories we tell. So, if you think we can help you tell your story, we’re all ears.
